Developed in 2008 by Laney Rosenzweig after studying EMDR, ART uses bilateral stimulation through eye movements, but focuses directly on the trauma instead of free association.
ART guides the client to replace negative images connected to emotional pain with positive ones. Once the negative images have been replaced, the triggers are gone, and nightmare and intrusive thoughts stop. -
You will be seated, just moving your eyes back and forth during your session. You do not have to talk about the details or your pain or trauma. The process uses eye movements, guided imagery replacement, gestalt, and psychodynamic therapy to replace negative images with positive ones.

Frequently asked questions —
-
No. One of the unique benefits of Accelerated Resolution Therapy is that you do not need to verbally relive or explain every detail of painful experiences for healing to happen.
ART works by helping your brain and nervous system process the emotional charge connected to the memory, rather than requiring you to repeatedly talk through it. This makes therapy feel safer and often much less overwhelming—especially for people who shut down, dissociate, or struggle to put their experiences into words.
-
Traditional therapy often focuses on understanding patterns through conversation over time. ART helps create change at the nervous system level much faster.
Instead of spending months talking around the same issue, ART helps reduce the emotional intensity of painful memories so they stop feeling like they are still happening. Many clients describe it as: “I still remember it, but it no longer controls me.”
The goal is simple: keep the facts, lose the pain.
-
ART is often used for trauma, PTSD, anxiety, panic, intrusive thoughts, nightmares, grief, perfectionism, burnout, and emotional shutdown.
It can also be incredibly helpful for late-diagnosed Autistic adults who are carrying years of masking, shame, chronic stress, or childhood experiences that still shape how they relate to themselves today.
If something from the past still feels emotionally present, ART can help.
-
Many clients notice meaningful relief within just one session, although the number of sessions depends on the complexity of what we’re working through.
Because ART works directly with how the brain stores emotional experiences, it often creates faster movement than traditional weekly therapy. Clients commonly report feeling lighter, calmer, clearer, and surprised by how quickly things shift.
The goal isn’t speed for the sake of speed—it’s helping you finally move forward.
